Tohono O'odham students to build schools in Chiapas

Three students from Ha:sań Preparatory and Leadership School in Tucson will be packing their bags and hitting the winding road down to the highland cloud forests of central Chiapas this July. They are part of a delegation from Tucson accompanying Schools for Chiapas, the San Diego-based group, who since 1997 have been building secondary schools for the indigenous children in Chiapas.

For many Mayan children education opportunities beyond the sixth grade is a struggle. Lack of schools, teachers and the financial means of many indigenous families severely constrain their children's access to continued education. The Zapatistas have made it their goal to improve their lives and opportunities for their children by focusing on educational projects in their civilian controlled areas. The opening of the school in Oventic has helped open a small window of opportunity and hope in the Tzotzil highlands and the Zapatistas want to continue that success.

The delegation from Tucson will be contributing to the struggle for education by raising money and breaking a sweat this summer. Before their departure, Pueblo por la paz will host several events in June to raise awareness and money. We invite you all to these events to help benefit the Children in Chiapas.
